Govt working to reduce internet price: Tarana

State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim on Wednesday said the government is working to reduce internet price at the consumer-level.

The state minister made the disclosure while briefing media after a meeting with telecom operators and internet gateway providers at her secretariat office in Dhaka.

A reduction on the existing VAT and tax, in the sector will be proposed to the concerned ministry with a view to reducing the internet price, Tarana said.

She said that a letter in this regard will be sent to the finance minister within a day or two.

Currently, mobile network operators and internet gateway providers are paying 15 percent VAT and 5 percent supplementary duty, Tarana said.

Besides, they are also paying 1 percent surcharge, 5.5 percent, to the telecom authority (BTRC) as revenue sharing and 1 percent to social obligation fund, she said.
