Mithun elected CWAB president

Mohammad Mithun, an active cricketer, has been elected president of the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB). 

Following his election, Mithun vowed to work for domestic cricketers' rights, stating he is prepared to confront the cricket board to secure their facilities and demands.

Mithun, a long-time key person for cricketers' rights, will lead the CWAB committee for a two-year term, aiming to address the concerns and improve conditions for players.

The election took place at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with both online and offline voting options. 

Of the 215 eligible voters, 188 cast their votes. 

Mithun secured a decisive victory with 154 votes, defeating his sole opponent, former cricketer and match referee Salim Shahed, who received 34 votes.

The CWAB election involved 11 posts, with 10 candidates elected unopposed due to a lack of multiple contenders. 

The unopposed elected members of the executive council include Nazmul Shanto, Mehedi Miraj, Akbar Ali, Rumana Ahmed, Shamsur Rahman, Irfan Shukkur, Khaled Masud, and Imrul Kayes.

The CWAB is responsible for managing the welfare of cricketers across Bangladesh. 

In recent years, the organisation has faced criticism for its lack of significant contributions, rendering it largely ineffective. 

Previously, the CWAB was led by former cricketers, but recent amendments now allow active cricketers to contest elections. 

This change reflects the belief that current players better understand the challenges and deprivations faced in domestic cricket, making their participation in leadership roles essential.
