World Environment Day being observed

The World Environment Day 2016 is being observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe today (Sunday) with a focus on creating awareness about protecting national resources, including the wildlife and forests, reports the UNB.

 

The theme of the day this year is ‘Go Wild for Life’.

 

The theme carries the message of fight against the illegal trade in wildlife which not only contributes to the erosion of biodiversity, but also threatens the survival of elephants, rhinos and tigers, among many other species.

 

World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment.

 

First observed in 1973, WED has now become a widely recognized day being marked in more than 100 countries across the globe.

 

The day is observed every year on June 5 throughout the world with different themes to create awareness about the importance of protecting planet Earth and Mother Nature.

 

Various programs, including colorful procession, rally, painting exhibition, essay writing competition among juveniles and children and open discussion, have been taken up across the country in observance of the day.

 

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion calling upon people to come forward along with government efforts to protect the country’s environment and biodiversity.

 

They also wished all-out success of all programs of the day.
