Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned till 2 pm, opposition demands discussion on Adani row

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm on Thursday amid noisy scenes with opposition members raising various issues. Opposition members rushed to the Well raising slogans as soon as Speaker Om Birla welcomed a Parliamentary delegation from Zambia and started Question Hour.

The speaker objected to the noisy scenes and asked the members not to make unsubstantiated claims. As the slogan shouting continued, the Speaker adjourned proceedings till 2 pm, reports Hindustan Times.

The Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha will start separate discussions on Thursday on President Droupadi Murmu's address which she delivered to both Houses of Parliament assembled together on January 31. The first part of the Budget session will take up the discussion on Motion of Thanks to the President's address, and then on the Union Budget 2023-24 that was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday.

Opposition parties have been seeking to raise the Adani issue, Chinese transgressions at the border and role of Governors in states. The Opposition also criticised the Budget on Wednesday, accusing the Centre of doing little to address rising prices, widening economic disparities, and unemployment.

Communist Party of India MP Binoy Viswam on Thursday gave a suspension of business notice to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar demanding a discussion on the Adani stock crash, terming the matter as "urgent".

Serving the notice under Rule 267, the CPI MP said that money belonging to the people of the country is at risk of "being wiped out" due to the crisis currently unfolding with the Adani group. 

The Budget session of the Parliament began on Tuesday with the maiden address of President Murmu to the joint sitting of both Houses and the tabling of the Economic Survey.

The first part of the session ends on February 14 and the second part will begin from March 12 and continue till April 6. The government plans to bring around 36 bills during the session.
