Curfew lifted from 5 Manipur districts, 140 weapons surrendered

After weeks of violence, curfew was finally removed from five Manipur districts, and relaxed in some other areas, reports NDTV.

Just a day earlier, India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a peace plan for the state. After he voiced a warning of strict action, around 140 weapons were surrendered in 24 hours, the state's police said.

The weapons include AK-47s, INSAS Rifles, teargas, sten guns, a grenade launcher and a range of pistols.

Ethnic violence first broke out in the hill districts on May 3. After that, about 2,000 weapons were looted from the police armoury. Over 80 people were reported to have been killed in the clashes that followed.

Amit Shah met with several groups while on a four-day visit to the state. He also announced a probe into the violence, and a peace committee as part of a plan to restore stability in the state.
