Cyclone Biparjoy disrupts flight ops in Mumbai

Inclement weather brought on by cyclone Biparjoy started affecting flight operations in India’s Mumbai on Sunday evening, causing a number of flights to be cancelled or delayed, and even forcing some to abort landing at Mumbai airport.

As the cyclone's intensity increased to an "extremely severe cyclonic storm," heavy rain and wind gusts lashed Mumbai, reports NDTV.

The disruption of flight operations left hundreds of passengers stranded for hours. Some of them took to Twitter to complain about the inconvenience. Air India issued a statement to announce some of its flights departing from Mumbai would be delayed.

Meanwhile, India's weather office has issued a 'thunderstorm' alert for some districts in coastal Maharashtra.

Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall on Gujarat and Pakistan coasts on Thursday (June 15).

The cyclone was named Biparjoy by Bangladesh. The name means "disaster" or "calamity" in Bengali. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) adopted the name in 2020 for all tropical cyclones that form over the North Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
