Gaza and Israel trade fire as Jenin withdrawal begins

The Israeli army says it carried out air strikes in Gaza in the early hours of Wednesday, in response to rocket fire.

Five rockets had been fired from Gaza - shortly after Israel began withdrawing from a two-day operation in Jenin refugee camp, in the occupied West Bank.

The rockets from Gaza triggered alarms in the southern Israel, but the military said all were intercepted. No injuries were reported.

Israeli forces started leaving the Jenin refugee camp late on Tuesday.

The military said it had carried out a "counter-terrorism operation", while the Palestinian foreign ministry called the escalation an "open war against the people of Jenin".

It saw drones carrying out air strikes and hundreds of Israeli troops inside the camp, engaging in gun battles with armed Palestinians.

Twelve Palestinians and one Israeli soldier were killed in the operation.

Earlier on Tuesday, seven people were hurt in a car ramming and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv.

Police say the attacker was a 20-year-old Palestinian man who was shot and killed by an armed civilian.
