Torrential rain: India issues red alert in Himachal and Uttarakhand

India's northern region has been hit hard with torrential rain for the fourth day in a row, leading to widespread destruction, landslides, and several deaths, reports NDTV.

In this regard, the country's weather department issued a red alert for the entirety of Himachal Pradesh and three districts in the Uttarakhand state on Wednesday.

Heavy rain has turned roads into rivers and swept away cars, houses, and bridges, as captured in numerous photos and videos. The state has tallied 31 deaths from rain-related incidents so far.

Neighbouring Uttarakhand has reported five deaths, while Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan reported one death each.

The loss of infrastructure in Himachal is estimated at between ₹ 3,000 crore and ₹ 4,000 crore, the Indian media reports.
