Video of women paraded naked in Manipur goes viral

A video of two women being paraded naked in a Manipur village went viral on social media Wednesday. The incident took place on May 4.

The incident caused widespread outrage across India, along with demands for the resignation of Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, reports Hindustan Times.

In the horrifying video, two women are paraded naked and molested by a group that drags them to a field. The women were allegedly gang-raped later, reports NDTV.

Opposition parties have come down heavily on the Union government, especially prime minister Narendra Modi, and asked him to break his silence and take the nation into confidence, about the situation in Manipur. PM Modi's BJP is in power in both the northeastern state and the Centre.

Deeply disturbing, unacceptable

"Simply unacceptable. Using women as an instrument in an area of communal strife. Grossest of constitutional abuse," India's Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said on the issue.

"We are deeply disturbed by the videos which have emerged. If the govt does not act, we will," he said.

Meanwhile, the state’s chief minister N Biren Singh says his government will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment, reports Hindustan Times.

One accused was arrested in the case, Manipur Police said on Thursday.

The government is likely to act against Twitter over the circulation of videos that "could lead to problems in law and order", reports NDTV.

The incident took place on May 4, a day after clashes broke out between the valley-majority Meitei and the hill-majority Kuki tribe in Manipur over the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status. The state has seen several incidents of violence and clashes for weeks.

Over 120 have died in the ethnic violence and thousands have been internally displaced and are now living in relief camps.
