Top Hamas leader Haniyeh killed in Iran

Hamas has said its leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed at his home in Tehran in an Israeli raid, BBC reports.

Israel is yet to respond but has previously vowed to "crush" the Palestinian group following the October 7 attacks that killed 1,200 Israelis.

Haniyeh's death comes hours after Israel says it killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike in the Lebanese capital Beirut.

The attacks on two senior Iran-backed militant leaders in the space of 24 hours has raised fears that the region could soon be engulfed in further conflict.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards say that one of Haniyeh's body guards was also killed in the strike.
