India concerned over ban on Awami League activities

India has officially expressed concern over the ban on the activities of the Awami League as a political party in Bangladesh.

Responding to a question at the weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said that India is "concerned at the curtailment of democratic freedom and of shrinking political space in Bangladesh."

"The ban on Awami League without due process is a concerning development. There is a method of doing things in a democracy. As a democracy, India is naturally concerned at the curtailment of democratic freedom and of shrinking political space in Bangladesh." Jaiswal said.

At the same time, India has reiterated its demand for holding elections in Bangladesh as soon as possible, he added.

“We strongly support the holding of early free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh.”
