At least 5 killed in Jerusalem shooting

At least five people were killed and several others injured in a shooting attack in Jerusalem on Monday morning, CNN reports, citing Israeli emergency services.

Among those killed was a man in his 50s and three men in their 30s, Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s emergency response service, said, adding that five people with serious gunshot wounds had been taken to hospital.

The MDA had said earlier that about 15 people were injured in the shooting.

The shooting happened along a major highway shortly after morning rush hour. Israeli police said two attackers arrived by vehicle at Ramot Junction and opened fire toward a bus stop. A security officer and a civilian at the scene then returned fire, killing the attackers, police said.

The shooting is the deadliest attack in the city since 2023, when two Hamas militants opened fire at a bus stop in West Jerusalem, killing three Israelis. Hamas did not take responsibility for the shooting in Jerusalem, but issued a statement welcoming it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the shooting scene, joining Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir.

Israeli soldiers have been dispatched to the area where a shooting attack took place, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, adding that they were searching the area for suspects in cooperation with Israeli police.
