Hong Kong fire kills at least 94 as rescuers search towers for hundreds missing

At least 94 people have died and 76 injured after a huge fire engulfed a high-rise public housing complex in Hong Kong - scores are missing.

The blaze, which tore through seven of eight tower blocks in Tai Po district on Wednesday, is now "basically under control", Hong Kong's leader says, reports BBC.

Firefighters have said they hope to finish checking flats this morning.

'This was preventable,' one resident says, as anger grows over safety lapses.

.It's unclear how many were inside the complex, which is home to around 4,600 residents, according to most recent census figures.

Questions are turning to how the blaze started - BBC Verify analyses footage of the initial stages.

Police say the materials on the outside of the building were not fireproof. Three construction company executives have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
