Death toll rises to 19 in Thailand with 80 injured

The death toll from a train derailure following the collapse of a crane in northeastern Thailand rose to 19 on Wednesday, with about 80 people injured, police said.

Local police told Reuters there were more bodies in the wreckage that had yet to be retrieved

The accident took place in the morning in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230 km (143 miles) northeast of Bangkok, on a train bound for Ubon Ratchathani province.

A crane working on a high-speed rail project reportedly collapsed and hit the passing train, causing it to derail and briefly catch fire.

The fire has been extinguished and rescue work in now under way, police said.
