Mamata Banerjee may move Supreme Court over West Bengal poll results, alleges irregularities

Mamata Banerjee may challenge the outcome of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 in the Supreme Court of India, alleging large-scale electoral malpractice by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Election Commission of India, according to reports.
The possible decision was conveyed during a meeting with All India Trinamool Congress MLAs at her residence in Kalighat, as per reports, where Banerjee outlined her intentions to legally contest the poll mandate after the BJP secured a sweeping majority of over 200 seats, reports CNBCTV18.
A day earlier, Banerjee had said she would not resign despite the party’s defeat, while sharply questioning the credibility of the election process. She accused the Election Commission of playing “dirty and nasty games” and raised concerns over the integrity of the results.
Addressing the media in Kolkata, Banerjee said the real fight was not against the BJP but against the poll body itself. She alleged “direct interference” and claimed elections had been “stolen” in states including Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar and now West Bengal, without offering specific evidence.
The 71-year-old leader also made serious personal allegations, claiming she was assaulted at a polling station. “I was kicked in my belly and back. The CCTV was switched off. I was pushed out of the counting centre. As a woman, I was misbehaved with,” she said, adding she would pursue the matter further.
The BJP’s decisive victory marks a significant political shift in West Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress’s long-standing dominance in the state assembly. The party has yet to respond in detail to the latest allegations.
