Death threats against Sourav Ganguly, his wife

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and his wife Donna Ganguly have been the targets of anonymous death threats. 

A written complaint was lodged with Thakurpukur police station on Monday by Ganguly’s personal secretary, Tania Bhattacharya, and the matter has also been reported to the state intelligence department.

The complaint states that several offensive letters written in English had been arriving anonymously at the family’s address for the past six months. 

The latest letter, received on Monday, contained a direct threat to kill both Sourav and Donna. Until that point the family had not treated the correspondence as a serious security concern, but the explicit threat prompted them to approach the police.

Investigators found that a telephone number mentioned in the letter is listed on TrueCaller under the name Arun Kumar, although it has not yet been established whether that individual is responsible. 

Police have opened an investigation. In 2017 Ganguly was the subject of a similar death threat; a young man named Nirmalya Maiti was arrested in connection with that earlier incident.
