Nobel laureate Amartya Sen declines Banga Bibhushan award

Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen declined the West Bengal government's Banga Bibhushan award, reports The Economic Times.

"I spoke to my father this morning. He told me that he has received innumerable awards throughout his lifetime. He wants these awards to go to other people," Amartya Sen's daughter, Antara Dev Sen, said.

The Left Front previously urged intellectuals, including Nobel laureates Amartya Sen and Abhijit Binayak Sen, to reject the honor bestowed by the 'corrupt' state administration for the benefit of job seekers and those allegedly duped by the West Bengal School Service Commission scandal.

Sen was named as the state government's nominee for the Banga Bibhushan award on Saturday.

The West Bengal government bestows the Banga Bibhushan Samman title to recognize individuals for their contributions in a variety of sectors.
