National Energy Security Day Tuesday

The National Energy Security Day-2016 will be observed tomorrow commemorating the historic decision taken by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.

 

On August 9, 1975 Bagabandhu bought five gas fields from the then Shell Oil Company for the state. The government has been observing the day since 2010, a BSS report has said.

 

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the eve of the day.

 

In his message, President Abdul Hamid called upon all to contribute to national development by making proper use of natural gas and stopping its wastage.

 

Power and gas are the main driving force of the economy, he said, adding that the government has taken various steps for exploration of natural gas and coal and their development considering their importance for economic development. 

 

The President recalled the historic role of Bangabandhu in ensuring energy security of the country, saying that Bagabandhu had bought five gas fields from the then Shell Oil Company for the state on August 9 in 1975.

 

As a result of this time befitting decision of the Father of the Nation, the gas fields have not only been supplying of gas but also contributing to achieving energy security of the country over the last four decades, he added.

 

The President said the National Energy Security Day-2016 will help create awareness about rational use of gas and stopping its misuse.

 

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also called upon all to be more caring to ensure the best use of natural gas and prevent wastage of this resource.
