Oil spill into Karnaphuli: Ship owner fined Tk 3 crore

The Department of Environment has fined the oil company 'MT Desh-1' on the charge of polluting the Karnaphuli River due to leakage of oil from its tanker vessel.

Azadur Rahman Mallik, the director, issued the order after hearing in this regard with the presence of representatives of 'MT Desh-1' at the Environment Department office on Sunday.

MT Desh-1 is a ship under the M/S Agragami Shipping Lines at Narayanganj owned by Mohammad Nasir Uddin.

Sangjukta Dasgupta, assistant director of the Environment Department at Chittagong Office, said that a collision took place between the fuel lighter vessel MT Desh-1 and the consumable oil vessel City-34. The tanker of MT Desh-1 leaked and spread oil in the Karnaphuli River on Friday morning.
