Volunteerism is not a choice, it’s a responsibility

Bangladesh is a country in transition with many opportunities but also with massive challenges. Widespread poverty, overpopulation and poor governance are among Bangladesh’s development challenges. The infrastructure is unable to keep pace with the economic growth, corruption is widespread and Bangladesh is suffering from the effects of climate change. But Over the year these challenges was partially overcome with the help of the people who volunteered to change the fate of the nation.

Volunteerism is not a choice, it’s a responsibility – In this backdrop, it is of utmost importance to give the youth a sense of purpose in. Volunteerism inspires the youth to connect with their community as well as the people of the locality. This gives them a sense of purpose to do small things which makes a bigger impact to the society. 

The emergence of Volunteer for Bangladesh (VBD) has strengthened JAAGO as an organization that was making an impact in the lives of the poor. Since its inception in early in 2011, Volunteer for Bangladesh encourage volunteers to become a part of the youth family and bring positive change within and people around him/her. VBD allows the volunteers to come up with their innovative ideas, sharpen and implement it to a way that benefits the community. I have always believe in decentralization of power and through VBD I have created a platform for the youth outside the capital city where their voice is heard and valued. 

Currently VBD has 35000 volunteers all over Bangladesh. The overall goal of the initiative is to engage youth with the communities to integrate volunteerism in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. However, the goals and targets are much more multifaceted this time; Bangladesh government alone can’t achieve them without the assistance of both development partners and the beneficiaries. Collaboration with the beneficiaries is essential, especially youth (18-35 years) who are considered the future of Bangladesh. And through this project, VBD plans to channel volunteers’ passion and dedication in the development process of Bangladesh.  This will give volunteers a positive sense of purpose in life, without getting themselves involved unlawful activities and extremism.

To develop the potential and possibilities for young people in a globalized world, every year we arrange National Youth Assembly. Young Leaders from 64 Districts of Bangladesh participates in this Inclusive and Engaging Program.  The National Youth Assembly (NYA) has been an impactful platform for the young people in Bangladesh to learn and be motivated towards taking action for tackling society’s greatest challenges and to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. 

Through discussions, skill-building workshops, networking sessions and activities, the National Youth Assembly Delegates with experienced hands and experts in the field will gain the relevant resources and opportunities they need to create impact and take responsibility to make a change in their own community.The positive impacts that volunteerism carries are undeniable, as it does not only mold quality human capital for the nation, but through it, we are also preparing future generation to lead the country.
